Constructing the “D” (Martyr) Statement

So far, the protagonist has been an Orphan, a Wanderer, and a Warrior. Itʼs time for him to sacriﬁce it

all and become the martyr who will ﬁnally answer the Central Question.

The Warrior Statement: # “. . .and he must respond by doing D.”

The Home Alone Statement:# “. . .and he must now single-handedly defend the house.”

This is the true start of the Act III action as he acts on his early realization that he is truly the “man of the house”

and takes steps to defend it himself. He could run off and ﬁnd some grown-up to help him, but he wonʼt. . .he

canʼt. He goes from warrior to martyr. In ET, Elliott must let go of all physical and psychic ties to ET for him to

die and to be reborn. In TITANIC, Jack sacriﬁces his life, freezing to death, so that Rose -- and their love for

each other -- can survive.
